What Types of Scrap Metals Can Be Recycled? Information from a Forest View, IL Scrap Metal Recycling Center

scrap-metal-recycling-forest-viewRecycling scrap metal in Forest View is a great way to earn some extra cash, contribute to your local economy, and help the environment at large. For this reason, if you have any old metal items in your possession, you should consider recycling them.

Now, you might be wondering: are all metals recyclable? While not every single piece of metal in existence can be put through the recycling process (due to the fact that some are coated in hazardous materials), the vast majority of them can be recycled.

Below, we’re going to list some of the commonly recycled metals, discussing everything from their scrap value, to common examples, and more.

Steel

Simply put, steel is the most recycled material in existence—not just the most recycled metal, but the most recycled material, period. This is true for two reasons: 1. Steel doesn’t degrade when put through the recycling process, and 2. Steel can be found just about everywhere.

If you’re looking to recycle steel items, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding them. One thing to note, however, is that they don’t command much of a monetary return. A pound of steel will generally see a return of between 6 and 10 cents.

Iron

Iron isn’t recycled at quite the same rate as steel, but it’s still one of the most recycled metals in existence. As such, it commands around the same return as steel: 6 to 10 cents per pound. Popular iron items include iron fencing, nails, cutlery, and automobile parts, to name just a few.

Aluminum

Next up is aluminum, the most commonly recycled of the non-ferrous metals. Commanding a monetary return of around 50 cents per pound, aluminum can make you some decent money if you’re willing to look for it.

Commonly recycled aluminum items include soda cans, baking trays, aluminum foil, car components, and construction materials. Some other aluminum items include bike frames, baseball bats, and golf club shafts.

Brass

Brass is another type of metal that can be recycled, but which isn’t recycled quite as commonly as the metals reviewed above. The reason for this? Brass isn’t used as often as those other materials, and so isn’t quite as easy to find.

This, of course, means that the scrap value of brass is fairly high. Generally, you can expect a return of around $1.60 for a pound of brass scrap.

Copper

Copper is in the same category as brass, but to an even greater degree. Because copper is scarcely used in manufacturing, it isn’t as easy to find as many other types of metal.

As such, metal recycling centers are willing to pay a premium for it. Generally speaking, you can get around $2.65 in exchange for a pound of copper. Common examples of copper items include pipes, gutters, and electrical wiring.

E-scrap

You may be surprised to hear that all of the metal inside your electronics can be recycled. All you need to do is remove it from its encasement. The metals inside of electronics varies from copper, to tin, to aluminum, and more.

The monetary return you get for E-scrap largely depends on the type of scrap it is. For instance, copper E-scrap will see a larger return than aluminum E-scrap.
